Mindframe represented at JERAA Conference 2019

Representatives from Everymind’s Mindframe team, Dr Elizabeth Paton, Jennifer Howard and Clare Jones are presenting at the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia (JERAA) Conference from 4-6 December.

The annual JERAA Conference is an opportunity to learn from leaders in journalism research, practice and education. This year’s conference is hosted by The University of Sydney, with the theme of Journalisms: Plurality, Precarity, and Possibilities, where speakers explore the varied nature of journalism in discussion of threats and opportunities for the field.

Elizabeth Paton and Jennifer Howard will be presenting on Thursday, 5 December on the newsworthiness of protective portrayals of self-harm and suicide. Their presentation is a case study based on Mindframe’s work with Netflix Australia on 13 Reasons Why and the limited news coverage with respect to support approaches for viewers. It also explores possible implications of this for Mindframe’s role in the university sector to upskill future journalists to find the newsworthy angle even when meeting the media guidelines for safe and sensitive reporting of suicide and mental illness.

Dr Elizabeth Paton and Clare Jones are both presenting on Friday, 6 December in Session 7, on “New possibilities in health news.” Dr Paton’s presentation is on a critical review of evidence on the impact of suicide reporting in news and information media, and Ms Jones’ is on the Mindframe AOD Evidence Check, which was used to support the development of the Mindframe AOD guidelines.
